Canadian-born, Germany-raised artist Lisa Schoefer is behind a striking art project: "Places of Democracy – A Europe
an Series of Paintings." Working in luminous, richly colored oils, she paints on-site at landmark sites tied to European democracy — from the Berlin government quarter and the Reichstag to the European Parliament in Strasbourg, the former West German capital Bonn, the Paris Senate, and now Hambach Castle, long considered the birthplace of German democracy.
The project grew out of her concern for Europe amid Brexit, populist shifts in France and Poland, and the fragility of the EU's cohesion. Her exhibition, bringing together canvases from Strasbourg, Berlin, Bonn, and Paris for the first time, runs through mid-December at the Rhineland-Palatinate State Representation in Berlin.
